Fall Prevention and Balance Program

Kamelya Home Health developed and introduced a fall prevention and balance program at local independent living facilities, assisted living facilities, and group homes in 2019.  Our agency invested in a high-tech, Medicare-approved portable balance machine which allows us to test systems responsible for integrating balance, vision and movement. Our medical director and physicians are able to diagnose and develop a treatment plan with our physical therapists to greatly reduce or prevent falls.

Our fall prevention program has proven to be very successful. Local cardiologists have also expressed interest in our program as many of their patients are taking blood thinners and are at risk of internal hemorrhaging should they fall . Facts about Falls and Related Injuries

Falls and fall related injuries are among the most serious and common medical problems experienced by older adults

Each year approximately 1 in 3 people, age 65 and older, sustain a fall, and half of them fall more than once.

Over 3 million Americans, age 65 and older, visited the ER / ED in 2015 due to fall related injuries, and over 1.6 million were admitted.

Falls are the #1 cause of death in older adults.  Falls often result in hip fractures, shoulder and head injuries, internal bleeding, and other complications.

What is a Portable Balance Machine?

Our portable balance machine measures ocular-motor, vestibular, and musculoskeletal systems related to balance, and testing is conducted by a physical therapist or exercise physiologist, and is overseen by a medical doctor.
